Thesis (D.P.T.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2016.
A literature search was conducted to determine if proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is more effective than neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) for improving standing balance during gait in a middle-aged female with generalized weakness and decreased balance due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. PEDro, PubMed, and Google Scholar were analyzed for articles that pertained to the research topic in March 2016. Four randomized control trial (RCT) studies used a control and experimental group to assess the effect of PNF versus no PNF intervention. One observational study viewed the effect of NDT on gait. Authors of four of the articles found significant improvements in balance, gait, and function with PNF. The author of one of the articles discovered a significant improvement in gait using NDT. These results moderately suggested the utilization of PNF and NDT as effective treatments for RA patients with antalgic gait, balance deficits, and weakness. There needs to be further research on the implementation of PNF and NDT on RA patients. PNF and NDT applied to RA patients could enhance their gait, balance, and overall function. It is crucial that therapists utilize PNF and NDT techniques for balance and gait on RA patients to ultimately improve their quality of life.
