This study analyzed restaurant reviews in large-circulation U.S. daily newspapers to determine the degree to which the overall assessment direction of a review varied by cuisine, meal price, and geographic region. A content analysis was performed upon a sample of 133 reviews drawn from 13 newspapers for the 2000 calendar year. Assessment direction was measured on a 5-point scale ranging from entirely negative to entirely positive. The study found that while reviewers assessed 28 different cuisines, they did not express a distinct preference for any one cuisine. Inexpensive meals were reviewed least often, but they represented the only price point to receive more positive than negative reviews. Reviewers on the coasts were the toughest; those in the North Central and Southeast United States were the most generous with praise. Dichotomized data indicated that, overall, reviewers gave restaurants far more negative than positive assessments.
