Loneliness Experienced by Older Adults: An Exploration of How the Livability of the Built Environment Influences Perceived Social ConnectionsWilliam HeardAccording to the HealthyPeople 2020 report, loneliness within the geriatric community has become a growing problem due to the gaining population within American Cities. As the older adult population continues to expand, there will be a greater need for research that explores the connection between the loneliness they experience and the environment that they live in. Currently, the existing literature on loneliness has just begun exploring the impact that the environment has on loneliness and is rather limited. The purpose of this study is to examine that relationship by exploring how older adults experience both the built environment and loneliness to help further the literature. The mixed methods approach illuminated multiple aspects of the built environment that may have an impact on the loneliness that older adult populations experience. The overall implication of the research shows that older adults experience the built environment as being exclusionary, which has a side effect of increasing their isolation. Additionally, this project's exploration of loneliness illuminated multiple themes that help to further understand their lived experience of loneliness, such as it being a temporarily painful experience. A discussion of the themes, clinical implications and future areas of study will also be addressed. Keywords: Loneliness, older adults, elderly, built environment, neighborhood, livability, AARP, UCLA Loneliness Scale.
