In this study, results from the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (CMAM) are analyzed for investigating various mechanisms and forcings which determine the ozone distribution and variability over climate timescales. These issues are studied in a comprehensive framework which takes into account the dynamical, radiative and photochemical processes and interactions taking place throughout the troposphere, stratosphere and mesosphere regions. The model resolves the main features of the large scale circulation including the transport and mixing of constituents. The associated production and loss terms are computed with an on-line photochemical module for determining the distribution of ozone and water vapour used for the computation of the radiative processes. Multi-year model integrations have been performed and compared against climatological datasets to assess various aspects of the general circulation in different regions under various conditions. Specific processes such as species subgrid mixing and ozone radiative feedback have been analyzed by comparing results from different simulations. The study highlights the model strengths and limitations and its capability to resolve the complex nature of the processes which determine long-term changes occurring in the climate system.
