The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between leadership styles of Nursing Home Administrators (NHAs) and NHAs specified style and quality measure ratings as measured by the Minimum Data Set 3.0 (MDS 3.0) and Nursing Home Compare Report, respectively for NHAs in the State of North Carolina. Current literature has discussed specified leadership styles and overall quality of life for nursing home residents but has not examined any relationship between NHA leadership style and quality measure ratings. A quantitative methodology and survey research design were used for this study. The methodological design was intended to determine whether or not there are any significant relationships between an identified leadership style and a particular quality measure. The survey included demographic data as well as 2 unmodified instruments. A sample of 45 NHAs in North Carolina were included to determine if leadership style has an impact on resident quality of life. The results revealed that North Carolina NHAs primarily exhibited Transformational and Transactional Leadership Styles, with no leadership meeting the characteristics of Laissez Faire. Medicare quality measure ratings, when analyzed with each leadership style, revealed no significant differences between Transformational and Transactional leaders on any of the quality measures of (mood, moderate to severe pain, quality of life, increased need for assistance/preferences for activities and mental status) for long stay and short stay residents. Future research should explore larger population samples of NHA leaders from other states/regions. The importance of the findings suggests that Transformational and Transactional leadership styles within the nursing home setting have no significant impact on the manner in which nursing home residents rate their quality.
