Labor union membership has steadily declined over the past three decades in both private and public sectors. However, research has suggested that unions may see a future growth in membership as an increasing number of women and minorities, both of which are more likely to join unions, will make up the workforce. This growth may also impact the healthcare industry as healthcare-related jobs are projected to greatly increase over the next decade.

520 $a For healthcare managers to be effective, an understanding of the relevancy of labor unions in healthcare needs to be scrutinized. As this analysis has shown, if the healthcare workforce becomes less unionized then workers will be more exposed to an increase in mistreatment by management. Alternatively, if the healthcare workforce becomes more unionized then healthcare leaders will need to implement policies and procedures for managing union employees. In addition, this analysis has shown that the presence of an RN union in a hospital setting can reduce heart-attack mortality rates by 5.5%. In order to effectively manage their workforce, it is vital for healthcare leaders to understand these aspects as well as the advantages and disadvantages of employing union labor.
