This research was conducted to investigate the pre-competition anxiety levels of swimmers with interventions of breathing techniques and mental imagery. Thirty five college level swimmers were recruited. The participants included male (19) and female (16) college swimmers between the ages of 18 -22 years old from a rural mid-western university. The instrument used to collect the data for this study was the CSAI-2(Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2) survey. Participants were separated into two groups, intervention or control according to individual events. Data was collected for both groups, 30 minutes prior to the start of the competitions. First group received three interventions of a combination of breathing techniques and mental imagery. The second group which was the control group completed the Jung Typology Test at the same time the first group received interventions. On the second day of data collection both groups again received the CSAI-2. The design was 2 x 2 x 2 (Group x Trial x Gender) repeated measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Alpha level was set at .05. When combining Trial and Group factors, there was a trend for Gender in cognitive anxiety, F(1,31)=3.21, p=.083, Eta squared=.094, as well as somatic anxiety, F(1,31)=3.06, p=.09, Eta squared=.09. There was a significant main effect for self confidence in Gender, F(1,31)=7.05, p=.012, Eta squared=.185. Males (26.26) over all showed higher self-confidence levels than Females (21.59). The main effect is shown in Figure I. No other main effects or interactions were statistically significant as shown in Tables II, III, and IV.
