Women today are challenged to balance vulnerability, self-realization, happiness, personal identity, personal development, and relational obligations, while simultaneously managing multiple unattainable expectations and incidents of shame and guilt. A narrative inquiry method was utilized to study the personal experiences of career driven women and their experience of vulnerability as they transition to motherhood and return to the workforce.

Utilizing an unstructured interview format, data was collected from eight female professionals who currently balance career, marriage, and motherhood. From the results, four major themes emerged: 1) Transitioning into a new identity; 2) Having a strong support system; 3) Managing feeling vulnerable; and 4) Understanding and processing feelings of guilt and shame.

Results of the inquiry have educational, societal, and clinical implications for practitioners, academics, and mothers. Increasing the societal understanding of mother's needs as they transition back into their careers and attempt to manage vulnerability could decrease the negative experiences and promote a more flexible approach to developing a healthy identity as a career-driven mother. Clinically, this study highlighted the need for systemic therapeutic interventions. Academically, the results of this study must continue to be explored further, by conducting further research on the experience of vulnerability, women's issues, and gender socialization.
