Nurse practitioners need to be culturally competent to effectively address the needs of diverse patients. Culturally congruent and competent care has been shown to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. Concepts from Leininger's theory of culture care and diversity; Papadopoulos, Tilki, and Taylor's model for developing cultural competence; Campinha-Bacote's model of process of cultural competence in the delivery of healthcare services; Jeffreys' cultural competence and confidence model; and Bandura's social learning theory served as a theoretical framework for examining the transcultural self-efficacy of NPs in Fresno County, California. A descriptive correlational design with an online survey was used. Pearson correlation results indicated significant relationships among the cognitive, practical, and affective subscales of the Transcultural Self-Efficacy tool. There were no correlations between years of practice and the cognitive, practical, and affective subscales. Overall, NPs in the study had medium transcultural self-efficacy levels. Nurse practitioners with low or high self-efficacy levels may be at risk for delivering culturally incongruent and incompetent care. Results suggest that nurse practitioners should continually seek knowledge on transcultural nursing and cultural competence.
