Background: In order for healthcare personnel to provide optimal care for the diverse patient population in the United States, they must be cognizant of the role that culture plays in health beliefs and health seeking behavior. A literature review yielded a lack of research on the Afghan American elderly population. Objective: The purpose of this study is to provide healthcare personnel with culturally relevant information that will allow them to optimally care for the Afghan American elderly population more effectively. Method: This study used an ethnographic qualitative design. A total of nine participants were recruited: four men and five Afghan women ranging from the ages of 65-80 years old and who had ever been treated in an acute care setting. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes within the semi-structured formal interviews that were conducted. Findings: Five themes were gleaned from the interviews: religion, family involvement in care, racism, healthcare personnel's perceived lack of interest in culture, and language as a barrier. Two previously unreported themes were identified in this study that were not identified in any of the previous studies: healthcare personnel's perceived lack of interest in culture and racism. Implications: In order to effectively serve a diverse patient population, healthcare professionals not only need to see the importance that culture and religion play in healthcare beliefs, but also need to know how to access resources that will provide them, the healthcare providers, with relevant cultural and religious information.
