In a musical score there are many instructions written by the composer that give a piece musical and artistic qualities. These markings give a performer a basic idea of what the composer is trying to communicate through sound. Aside from the markings and the notes themselves, the only other aspect of music that a performer can extract from a score is the theoretical foundation of the sound itself. The theory on which it was composed makes a piece of music cohesive and complete. In order to exploit a piece of music's musical qualities, one must also utilize the theory involved to better understand and execute the artistic qualities. This involves micro and macro analysis and a thorough breakdown of the piece so the performer has the most tools possible to better execute passages that require intensive interpretation. Doing so will allow the musician to formulate original ideas which will lead to a unique performance that will stand alone as a true interpretation of a piece of music.

The emphasis of this thesis is the development and use of this skill as a musician. When a musician is able to interpret a passage creatively, it then becomes easier to elicit an emotion that will be associated with that passage. Ultimately, a musicians goal is to be capable of feeling what they are playing and communicating that emotion to an audience. Although the idea of theory as emotion sounds contradictory, this thesis will provide evidence that there is correlation between the two.
