Thesis (D.P.T.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2016.
A literature review was performed in order to assess whether slackline training would be as effective as open-chained and closed-chained quadriceps exercises in improving knee joint stability and quadriceps activation patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Searches were performed in March 2016 through the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medline, and PubMed. From the resulting literature, five articles were selected for further review. Two articles supported the use of neuromuscular training or balance training in improving knee joint function or proprioception following an ACL reconstruction. One article supported the use of slackline training to improve quadriceps activation and increase demands of knee joint stability. Two articles supported the use of slackline training to improve quadriceps activation or knee joint stability in healthy adults or adults with knee injury. Slackline training could be used to improve knee joint stability and quadriceps activation in patients with ACL reconstruction. However, more research is required to determine how much quadriceps activation and joint stability would be required to return to pre-morbid activity.
