Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Pennsylvania State University, 2002.
This research was designed to explore a new phenomenon in the literature on extra-role behavior, Between-Group Helping (BGH), defined as discretionary acts of helping performed by a group in order to assist one or more other groups. Building upon theories of social identity, a model of the antecedents of BGH is presented is tested. In this model, I posit that identity-related factors influence members' categorization of the boundaries between their group and other groups. The nature of this categorization impacts members' intergroup bias, which in turn influences cooperation norms within the group. These norms, which are encouraged by member displays of intragroup helping and group autonomy, are hypothesized to predict BGH. A number of factors are hypothesized to moderate the relationship between cooperation norms and BGH, including group autonomy, slack, and knowledge of other groups' need for help. A field study examining these factors with 70 intact work teams across seven organizations was carried out to test the relationships between BGH and its antecedents. Results showed support for a number of the study's hypotheses. Implications of the study's findings for theory, research, and practice are discussed.
