Background: Internet-based interventions can be effective in health promotion and more cost-effective than conventional interventions. Cutting down on energy-dense food and increasing fruit and vegetable intake can promote health, control body fat, and prevent or help treat diseases. 520 $a Purpose: This study aimed to systematically evaluate the effect of Internet-based interventions on dietary intake and WC reduction among adults using meta-analytic methods.
520 $a Methods: The first meta-analysis involved randomized controlled trials (N=32 studies and 11,386 participants) that used the Internet as a main intervention approach and reported changes in energy, fat, or fruit and vegetable intake. The second meta-analysis reviewed randomized controlled trials (N=30 studies and 7,274 participants) that used the Internet as a main intervention approach and reported changes in WC.
520 $a Results: The first meta-analysis found that Internet-based interventions showed significant improvements on energy intake (-345 calories, 95% confidence interval [CI] = -460 to -230 calories), fat intake (-2.34%, 95% CI = -3.24 to -1.43%), and fruit and vegetable intake (0.73 servings, 95% CI = 0.13 to 1.34 servings). Internet-based interventions showed significantly better effects on dietary intake (Hedge's g= -0.14, -0.22, and 0.19) than minimal interventions. Meta-regression results showed that intervention length was significantly and positively associated with increases in fruit and vegetable intake. The second meta-analysis found that Internet-based interventions showed a significant reduction in the WC (-3.08 cm, 95% CI = -3.80 to -2.63 cm) and better effects on WC loss (2.51 cm, 95% CI = 1.61 to 3.41 cm) than minimal interventions. Meta-regression results showed that baseline WC, gender, and the existence of social support component in the intervention were significantly associated with WC reduction.
520 $a Conclusion: An Internet-based intervention has a significant and positive effect on dietary intake and WC reduction and its effect on WC reduction appears to be more evident with social support incorporated into the intervention. Providing a longer duration of an Internet-based intervention appears to be useful in promoting fruit and vegetable intake.
