Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Utah, 2008.
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among select features of camps, the nature of interactions between and characteristics of camp personnel and campers, and campers' acquisition of developmental outcomes relevant to the Self-Determination Theory. Participants were adult personnel (n=289), counselor teams (n=361) and campers (n=3030) from day and resident camps (n=21). Counselors and other adult personnel completed the Scenarios in Camps (SIC) questionnaire as a measure of their tendency toward autonomy support and control. Campers completed the Camper Developmental Outcomes (CDO) Scale, which provided a measure of three camper outcomes: camp-related increases in independence, friendship skills, and competence. Multilevel modeling was used to test the study hypotheses. The number of summers that campers had attended camp was identified as the only significant predictor of developmental outcomes ( t=2.205, p=0.028). Camper developmental outcomes increased as the number of summers campers attended their camp increased. In the sample data, the addition of the set of camp features reduced the Level 3 (i.e., camp) variance component from 2.9% to .01%.
