There has not been much research conducted on the hiring of African American head coaches in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) because, so few African Americans hold positions as head coaches in NCAA Division I and II schools. In addition, the career development of African Americans who have been hired into the position of head coaches has had limited research. The inequitable amount of African American head coaches in NCAA Division I and II school's athletic departments continue to be an issue. The problem is that there is not an equitable amount of African American head coaches at NCAA Division I and II schools. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions and observations of athletic directors regarding the hiring practices of African American head coaches at NCAA Division I and II schools. A multiple-case study was considered appropriate because the benefits derived from more than one case were considerable. To gain insight into why there are few African American head coaches at NCAA Division I and II schools, 12 athletic directors gave their informed consent to be interviewed. Interviewing continued until data saturation was reached.
