The following thesis presents a study of Frank H. Ogawa Plaza located within Oakland, California, as an investigation of how public spaces are used and how place identity is formed. This Plaza is a large public space centered in the downtown of the city and made accessible by various modes of transit. The research in this study sought to understand how the public uses the space and the consequent meanings that the public has attached to it. Research included observation; interview of users, neighboring business owners and employees, security guards, and city officials; and analysis of online written documents. The research revealed four strong categories of users and resulting meanings created through both the use and perceptions of the space from these users and those who did not use the Plaza.
