Earth is our mother
two Indian tribes in South America[videorecording] : - New York, NY :Filmakers Library,1988. - 1 videocassette (50 min.) :sd., col. ;1/2 in.
Directed by Peter Elsass.
Peter Elsass, a psychiatrist and anthropologist, has studied two Indian tribes in Colombia and Venezuela for the past sixteen years. His interest has been in their survival in the face of encroaching white civilization. The Motilon Indians, living in the lowland of Venezuela, have become spiritually and ecomically impoverished. They have given up their traditional ways and have become dependent on the missionaries. In contrast, the Arhuaco Indians, living in the mountains in the northern part of Colombia, have a well organized, hierarchical society. In a dramatic move, they threw out the Catholic missionaries and established their own independent education system. By taking a stand against foreign influences they are maintaining their cultural integrity.
